Tux 500 Linux Marketing Program Breaks $10,000 Funding Threshold
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, May 2, 2007 - With just under a week before the official opening of
practice for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500, the Tux 500 Linux marketing program has
now received over $10,000 in contributions from the global Linux open source community. As
testimony that the popularity of the event extends well outside the borders of the United States,
contributions to the innovative marketing program have arrived from twenty-eight different
nations and contribution totals from outside the U.S. exceed those from within the U.S.
The Tux 500 program seeks to build public awareness for the Linux computer operating system
by taking a visible role in the event, which unfolds throughout the month of May at the world
famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indianapolis 500, which is universally acknowledged
as the world's largest single day sporting event, is scheduled for May 27, 2007.
The team beneficiary of the sponsorship, Chastain Motorsports, is commemorating its ten-year
anniversary of its initial appearance in the race in 1997. Original members of the team have been
reunited for the effort, including team owner, Tom Chastain, Crew Chief, Darrell Soppe, and
seven-time veteran driver of the race, Stephan Gregoire. The distinctive two-tone blue Panoz
Honda #77 will initially sport the Linux mascot, Tux, on the car's nose, but will grow the Linux
presence on the car according to the ultimate funding raised by the May 21, 2007 contribution
deadline. Organizers of the Tux 500 program have set an ambitious funding goal of $350,000 to
acquire the primary sponsorship of the car, which would include the coveted space on the car's
side pods. Other companies participating as primary sponsors of cars in the race include Target,
Motorola, 7-Eleven, Panasonic, Delphi, Jim Beam, and the New York Stock Exchange.
In a separate development, Tux 500 merchandise has just been made available. The merchandise
features the new the Tux500 program logo and is available at Tux500.com. All proceeds from
Tux 500 merchandise sales are being donated towards the program's funding goal. Program
organizers are also promising exciting new content to be released soon on the Tux500.com web
site, YouTube, and it's MySpace page to help the community and the public learn more about this
unique Linux marketing program.
