Lions Club embraces Vector Linux
I would like to extend my thanks and complements to everyone involved in making Vector Linux adaptable, flexible and user friendly. My Lions Club sponsors a Computers for Kids program where we refurbish surplus computers, load Vector as the OS and either 1. give the finished machines to children who are otherwise unable to afford computers or 2. set up "Kids Cyber Cafes" (with network printer and donated Internet access) for local non-profits dealing with underprivileged children. We settled on Vector for the following reasons:
- Small, efficient OS with true user/root accounts.
- Outstanding hardware detection.
- Very user friendly and easy to teach/learn.
- Good selection of software in the repos.
- Benefits of Linux: virus-free, access to a wide variety of programs, etc.
We augment the installed systems with Puppy Linux in Live CD mode with USB drives for the kids to save their settings and files. We actually started with Puppy but found that separate user and root accounts are required if we are to minimize tech support calls. Working to Puppy's strengths as a Live distro allows us to reach kids who don't have a home environment where a donated computer can be placed but are still able to use library, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc. public computers.
I don't claim to be a Linux expert or evangelist. We are just trying to give underprivileged kids in our community access to world class technology and a level playing field.
Thank you in advance for your advice and guidance as we grow this worthy program.....I am extremely enthusiastic about the potential for this project to be a very positive influence on our community.
BTW, I ordered the 5.8 Gold CDs and eagerly anticipate ordering the 5.8 SOHO CDs when released.
