Managed Service Providers can now Offer Monitoring Appliances that also Deliver Secure Access and Control
SANDY, UTAH - February 19, 2007 - Opengear, a quality supplier of remote management solutions, today announced that it has partnered with Nagios to integrate their renowned open-source host and network monitoring program within Opengear's IM4200 gateways and CM4000 console servers.
Managed Service Providers can now extend the Nagios management solutions they offer their customers with affordable monitoring appliances that also provide out of band access and tools to reduce application, operating system, and hardware problem resolution times.
"Now that Nagios has become a standard tool for monitoring enterprise networks, we are seeing increased integration into infrastructure management appliances like Opengear's console servers," said Ethan Galstad, Nagios Developer.
How Opengear/Nagios Works:
Nagios diagnoses and alerts systems administrators about problems within their IT infrastructure by centrally monitoring systems and services across distributed networks. Opengear's IM4200 management gateways and CM4000 console servers now embed the Nagios NSCA client and NRPE server for integration into the Nagios-based monitoring infrastructure. Acting as distributed monitoring servers, these gateways and console servers run checks in conjunction with the master Nagios server.
To reach remote equipment and remedy problems, Opengear provides secure in-band and out-of-band access to the serial or network management consoles on the distributed systems and network devices. The high-availability, failover, and out-of-band features of the Opengear appliances ensure that administrators can still manage all the servers, routers and power devices in their remote data centers, even in the event of major network or system failure.
Together Opengear and Nagios Enable the Following:
* Secure access to text consoles (hosts or network devices) over RS232 ports (Telnet, SSH, etc.)
* Secure access to network consoles of servers and devices at remote LAN (HTTP, VNC, RDP)
* Securely access service processor management consoles (IPMI, iLO, RSA) over TCP/UDP
* Remote power cycling through service processors and intelligent power distribution units
* Remote KVM connections through service processors or local KVM over IP appliances
* Embedded console monitoring and logging in gateways and console servers for onsite problem analysis

"Configuration files are automatically generated depending on what services and devices are configured through the console server/gateway. Round-robin checks of all selected services are then routinely scheduled. Plug-ins to monitor connectivity and logs are provided. And we have a compiler suite to embed additional plug-ins into the IM gateway firmware," Waldie continued.
