Lägler completely migrates to Debian GNU/Linux
  Nov 15th, 19:02 UTC

Linux is becoming more and more popular in the business world and in the public sector. Companies are under increasing pressure to cut back costs and Linux is the cost-effective alternative to Microsoft products. What the city of Munich is presently implementing has already been achieved at the long-established company Eugen Längler GmbH & Co., located in the Swabian town of Güglingen. The entire company IT, including the ERP system they used, was changed over to Debian GNU/Linux.

The migration at Längler was started in November 2003. Until September 2004, 60 work stations were equipped with a Linux desktop. Moreover, the already implemented ERP system was switched to Linux on the client-side.

abas Business Software (ERP, PPC, MRP, eBusiness), which is used at Längler, has been optionally available on the front-end under the operating system Linux. Since 1995 the business software has also been running successfully on Linux servers. For the client migration project Längler chose the natural.DESKTOP made by natural computing, who also support a central administration of Linux PCs and Linux terminal servers. In the context of the project, the natural.DESKTOP was enhanced by the administration capability of the KDE interface.

Susanne Längler, CEO, summarizes the migration project: "As an internationally operating company we have to rely on a steady and secure IT environment. Our requirements were consequently implemented with the migration of the workstations to Linux. abas ERP already had the Linux client and with the natural.DESKTOP the appropriate product for the Linux migration was available. The migration was carried out fast, since the ERP client only had to be installed and distributed."
